Who am I?

Hi, I am Roarke. I'm a developer with many interests and a passion for learning and self-improvement. I love working on game-play, game feel and audio. I've had a drive for game development and have been creating and publishing games in various places online since the age of 14 (so about 10 years now). I've spent most of that time as a solo-developer and as such have picked up a variety of skills along the way. From Unity (C#) to Blender (modelling and animation) and Audacity, Cakewalk and Logic (audio recording and editing).

I've been a full-time solo musician for the past 5 years. Contrary to what one might expect, live music is a high pressure work environment. It requires discipline, communication and time management. I've toured the country multiple times, played small pubs and large festivals, collaborated closely with event organisers, sound engineers, performers, other song-writers, producers and venue owners. I've performed, mixed live sound for gigs, recorded, produced and released music and music videos, managed strict touring schedules and maintained strong working relationships.

I feel my experience in music (as well as studying Sound Technology in 2017) means that I would be just as comfortable in a composition/audio role as I would in a more hands-on role like programming or design.

In my free time I enjoy (aside from the obvious; games and gigs) a few high intensity activities like paintball and rock-climbing and a few more chill activities like reading a book in nature or hiking.

These are some of my favourite games ever:

  • Hollow Knight

  • ArmA 3

  • Little Big Planet (1 & 2)

  • Borderlands

Cutting down this list was hard work.

Heartless Dark (Steam)

This is my biggest project thus far. Heartless Dark is an atmospheric roguelike shooter. I solo-developed it over a year with the goal of publishing to Steam. It was made with extensive use of Unity3D and C#. I'm proud to say that I made all the game's assets - from modelling and animating to recording and editing sounds. Read more here...

Wasteland Fugitive

This project was made as a personal challenge.

Wasteland Fugitive is a first-person endless runner. Avoid the radiation and destroy security drones as you ride across procedurally generated landsapce.

One month of learning and growth specifically for this portfolio. I went out of my way to use patterns and functionality of both Unity and C# that I've not consciously explored before. I also aimed to sharpen my game math and learn FMOD integration. Read more here...
